Illusory Chance

چکیده

Despite concerted efforts by Carnap and others, including recently by Jon Williamson in an objective Bayesian setting, no satisfying philosophical justification for learning from experience has been produced thus far. I contend that finitude constraints imposed by our world on even otherwise-ideal agents suggest a new epistemic principle, Illusory Chance, which provides justification for learning in some settings. Some other benefits provided by this principle include a generalization of—and apparent improvement on—Bayesian decision theory, substantial progress toward resolving the venerable St. Petersburg paradox, and the revelation of substantive flaws in key arguments for probabilism.

Let me take the wheel: Illusory control and sense of agency

Illusory control refers to an effect in games of chance where features associated with skilful situations increase expectancies of success. Past work has operationalized illusory control in terms of subjective ratings or behaviour, with limited consideration of the relationship between these definitions, or the broader construct of agency. This study used a novel card-guessing task in 78 partic...

Orientation-selective adaptation to crowded illusory lines.

Visual adaptation has been successfully used as a psychophysical tool for studying the functional organisation of visual awareness. It has been shown that orientation-selective adaptation to a grating pattern occurs in crowded conditions. In such conditions, simultaneous presentation of flanking distractors pushes the target stimulus out of conscious perception and severely impairs orientation ...

Lewis’s Dilemma of Explanation under Indeterminism Exposed and Resolved

In a brief passage, David Lewis derives from quantum-theory a dilemma regarding the explanation of chance events which he tries to solve by first distinguishing plain from contrastive why-questions, and then arguing that with respect to chance events, only plain why-questions have answers. His brevity warrants elaboration and critique. I endorse his derivation, but I make a structural objection...

Perceiving illusory contours: figure detection and shape discrimination.

We investigate the relationship between illusory figure detection and discrimination of its shape, asking whether these depend on a single, two separate, or two sequential processes. In a simultaneous detection-discrimination experiment, we presented subjects with brief, backward-masked Kanizsa-type patterns consisting of four "pacmen," arranged as if at the corners of a 60-degree parallelogram...

From local to global processing: the development of illusory contour perception.

Global visual processing is important for segmenting scenes, extracting form from background, and recognizing objects. Local processing involves attention to the local elements, contrast, and boundaries of an image at the expense of extracting a global percept. Previous work is inconclusive regarding the relative development of local and global processing. Some studies suggest that global perce...
